The role of a Scrum Master is often misunderstood and is not limited to facilitating Scrum ceremonies. Michael James, in his Scrum Master Checklist, has identified four focus areas of a Scrum Master:
- Product Owner
- Development Practices
The proportion of time a Scrum Master allocates to these areas also changes over time as seen in the diagram below. Initially, when a new team is formed, she might focus more on helping the Product Owner and the team. Over time, as the team get more self-organized, the Scrum Master focuses more on organization and development practices.
